![]() During the summer holidays of 2013, I experienced the best two weeks of my life. I had the opportunity to visit Ghana, which is situated on the West African coast, right in the Centre of the countries along the Gulf of Guinea. For two weeks I had the privilege of experiencing this country, meeting its people and staying in a beautiful village named Luvudu. The aim of my trip was to visit the region with the hope of building a school and educating the children there. Here, I am going to be sharing a page from my journal. Friday, August 2nd 2013. Day five. “This has simply been the best day so far. Today was my first day of teaching, so I shared a class with my friend. We began the day nervous, as we were placed with our classes. Looking at the students, they were just as worried. Apparently to a lady I had been speaking to earlier, they had only ever had four white people visit the village before. They had visited for a day, stayed in a hotel and then moved on. We were staying in the village for 8 days! Finally, we were given a class. Kindergarten was very challenging at times, because they had not been at school for very long. Their English wasn’t as good as the others, but it was just about enough for them to understand what we were saying. With that in mind we started with the basics like the Alphabet. It took some practice, but after they had repeated it back to us a few times, the letters just rolled off their tongues. There was something magical about that. It was the simplest of things, but hearing their voices singing the Alphabet gave us a great sense of pride that we had achieved something. The good thing was, that was only the first hour. Sport was next on the agenda, so we headed out with a football. This evidently seemed to be their favorite, if not the only sport they had played, so after ten minutes or so I exchanged it for a few Frisbees and skipping ropes we had brought with us. Now that was fun! Something new for them to enjoy, this was also something everyone could get involved in and enjoy, rather than just the top football players kicking the ball past everyone! At the end of the week we will leave all of the stuff with them that we have brought, including some colored chalk… which seemed to amaze them. After sport we returned to the classroom, where we decided to play a little game. So they pushed all the desks to the side and arranged themselves into a circle. That’s when the strangest thing happened! One of the little girls, who were a twin, jumped out and began to sing. The rest of the group copied her and so it continued! Three songs later they stopped and we began art… where I found out they had never seen colored chalk before! It was funny how the little things impressed them. The little things that we take for granted. I will never forget the opportunity I have been given.. That was one of the best days of my life and most definitely the best day of the trip. I have provided a video of the singing. Thank you so much for reading! Lyrics: Sabale, Sabale, Sabale, Sabale, Sabale, Sabale, Fofo fe Sabale, Dada fe Sabale, egawoe kpanya ga mado manya egawoe nam lo. Eguwoe! I have no idea what it meant, but apparently it was something to do with an onion… and flatulating! Oh well! Thank you for reading, Nathan Harrison-Clarke |
